Long-jawed Orbweavers (Tetragnathidae)

Long-jawed orbweavers can be up to 25 mm long. California has about a dozen species in about half a dozen genera, the most frequently seen being Tetragnatha versicolor and other Tetragnatha species. Tetragnatha are very long and skinny and usually build their webs directly over running water. Tetragnathid webs resemble those of araneids, but are horizontally oriented and have an open center.
